Overview
Voetbalmix.nl is a large-scale football training and coaching platform built entirely from the ground up with a custom WordPress architecture. Rather than relying on a pre-built theme or a collection of off-the-shelf page builders, the platform was developed as a fully customised WordPress solution using PHP, ACF Pro, custom post types, dynamic fields, and purpose-built templates.
The platform brings together hundreds of pages, football exercises, training sessions, categories, instructional content, instructor resources, search and filtering functionality, customer reviews, and dynamically managed content within one structured ecosystem. Every major section was carefully designed and developed to give the client greater control over their content while maintaining a consistent, scalable, and user-friendly experience.
The result is more than a traditional WordPress website — it is a custom-built football learning platform and content management system, designed to support a large and continuously growing library of training resources.
Challenge
01 — Managing a Large-Scale Content Structure
The platform contains hundreds of pages and a substantial amount of football training content. Creating an architecture that could keep this information organised, searchable, and easy to maintain was one of the biggest challenges.
02 — Developing Everything From Scratch
The project required a completely custom WordPress theme rather than adapting an existing theme. Building the frontend architecture, templates, layouts, components, and functionality with PHP and WordPress development required a carefully structured development process.
03 — Creating a Flexible Content System
Different types of content required different fields, layouts, and relationships. ACF Pro had to be implemented strategically to create dynamic and reusable content structures without making content management unnecessarily complicated.
04 — Building Custom Functionality
The platform required much more than standard WordPress functionality. Course and training content, categories, filters, instructor information, search experiences, and other custom features had to work together as one coherent system.
05 — Maintaining Performance at Scale
With a large content library, numerous dynamic sections, images, and database-driven content, maintaining a fast and reliable experience was essential. The architecture needed to remain efficient as the platform continued to grow.
06 — Creating a Consistent Experience
Despite the large number of pages and content types, the entire platform needed to feel like one unified product. Establishing reusable templates and consistent UI patterns was essential for maintaining visual and functional consistency across the ecosystem.
Approach
Custom WordPress platform for Dutch football coaches. Filterable drill library across age, field size, formation and game situation, training builder that turns drills into ready sessions, multi‑session plans, and a drag‑update season planner. Coach toolbox covers stopwatch, round timer, countdown, multi‑timer and a soccer scoreboard. MemberPress drives tiered paywalls, magic email links handle return visits, ACF + ACFE keep the editor clean. Seven custom post types, 25+ taxonomies, AJAX favorites and live search.
01 — Architecture Before Development
We first mapped the content structure and identified the different page types, content relationships, categories, and functionality required by the platform. This created a clear foundation before development began.
02 — Build the Theme From the Ground Up
Instead of modifying a pre-existing theme, I developed a custom WordPress theme using PHP, creating the templates, components, layouts, and functionality specifically for the platform.
03 — Create a Dynamic ACF-Powered System
ACF Pro was integrated deeply into the architecture to create structured fields, reusable content modules, and dynamic templates. This allowed complex content to be managed efficiently while keeping the frontend consistent.
04 — Develop Custom Features Around Real User Needs
Every major feature was developed around the platform’s actual content and user journey. Training categories, exercises, instructors, search, filtering, content sections, and supporting functionality were connected into one seamless experience.
05 — Make the System Scalable
Reusable components, structured templates, custom fields, and a modular architecture were used throughout the project. This made it possible to expand the platform with new pages and content without rebuilding the experience from scratch each time.
06 — Refine the Complete Experience
The final stage focused on responsive behaviour, usability, performance, content presentation, and cross-device consistency to ensure the platform remained practical for both content managers and users.

This project represents a different level of WordPress development. The entire platform was built from the ground up — from the custom WordPress theme and PHP templates to the dynamic content architecture powered by ACF Pro.
